Festersen looks to scoop up support

Victory in the upcoming City Council election apparently tastes like strawberry cheesecake ice cream or lemon sorbet — at least in District 1, and if it’s councilman Pete Festersen winning the race.

On Monday, the first-term councilman kicked off his re-election campaign at the Dundee ice cream shop eCreamery. He unveiled two new flavors – Festilicious (strawberry cheesecake) and Thanks Pete (lemon) — and talked about building businesses in the area. Festersen’s district includes Dundee, Benson and Florence.

“We used to have lots of empty storefronts in Benson,” he said. “You don’t see that anymore.”

Festersen is being challenged by political newcomer, Edward Truemper, the director of pediatric critical care research at Children’s Hospital and the University of Nebraska Medical Center.

Truemper announced his candidacy in August. No word yet on if frozen confections will play a role in his campaign.
