Walmart is expanding its “neighborhood market” model deeper into Omaha, and could replace a longtime eyesore as a result.
The former Target location on Saddle Creek Road is eyed as the next site for the store, officials report.
An attorney for Walmart has been in informal contacts with the city for about a year, said Omaha City Councilman Chris Jerram, who represents the area.
Jerram said nothing has been finalized. He said the company is discussing the issue with the owners of that property.
The building has been empty since 2006, when Target closed the store after relocating to Crossroads Mall, 72nd and Dodge Streets. Could be a smart decision by the megafirm, considering the nearby University of Nebraska Medical Center’s coming expansion. The company’s already made headlines in another part of the city that needs economic development.
